A cold winter’s night in Bondi meant only one thing…Gnawin’! What can I say, it’s Canadian, it’s North American. There was no green food. It was “side boob Saturday” (sorry no pics of the waitresses).

Parramatta is very far away from home – but I accepted this (sub)urban safari challenge as it was so close to work! The food was nice and quite plentiful. Matt was harassed by a somewhat mentally unstable person on the way out. As these reviews are pretty lame on the descriptions of the food, I will at least do a roll call of attendees: Rozie, Dave, Thommy, Teresa, Matt L, Wei and Wu. CL, my workmate was invited to be a temporary member, but unfortunately, she couldn’t make it.
Chilli crab!
Lemongrass prawns
Hainanese chicken (blurry)
Sambal greens ?? very spicy anyway

16/12/09. This Indonesian restaurant has been seen on Food Safari. Can’t remember much except that the food was pretty good and BJ came late. I particularly like Indo desserts. That is all. I also liked the fact that this “suburban” safari was a 5 minute drive from home ;)

This is from winter last year. I’m a bit slow in updating this blog. We have already been here before, but thought we should go for tried and tested.

Al Aseel, Greenacre

So I went to Al Aseel, a great Lebanese restaurant in Greenacre (the hood). I can say that because, when I was born, I lived there. It wasn’t part of the usual (sub)urban safari adventure, it was a farewell dinner for a workmate. I was quite surprised that this place was suggested, as most of the work crew don’t live anywhere near here and are pretty, white bread. This place was good value, food was fresh and came out quite quickly. Although I enjoyed the dinner, it’s a long way to go to get good Lebanese, especially when Cleveland Street, Surry Hills is just up the road.

Hot pot at Ben Ngu

Thommy had already checked this place out a week earlier so we already knew it would be good. Unfortunately/fortunately, Ben Ngu was reviewed in SMH earlier in the week, so the place was packed at 7:30pm. The wait staff were stressed and overwhelmed, but when we finally got a table and food on it, it was great.

African Feeling, Newtown

Fu Fu

A small African restaurant which has been around for years. Even though it was a Wednesday night, it was quite busy with only one and a half waitstaff. The service was slow, this was unfortunate because we were really hungry. The food was OK: we had a mixed entree of fried things, vegetarian jungle, chicken stew, lamb tangine and coconut curry. Unfortunately, most of the food was too spicy for me (even though we asked for mild), so I didn’t eat too much – except for the Fu Fu (which by itself was very IBS friendly). I enjoyed the special African drinks: African Fruit Juice and Ginger Beer.

Hidden away in an arcade in Chinatown, this place was bursting at the seams on the Thursday night before Good Friday. The food/soup was very good but you can’t have more than about 5 people on one table.

The food was great, but the service was crap. Also incorporating Matt’s birthday and more Chinese New Year celebrations.
